What cart abandonment is

Cart abandonment happens when a customer adds products to the cart or starts checkout and leaves without paying. Common reasons are unexpected shipping costs or delivery times, doubts about size or compatibility, a missing payment method or simply a distraction. An abandoned cart message should answer that reason, not just remind the customer the cart exists.

When to send each message

A short sequence that stops when the customer replies or buys recovers more than a single message and annoys less than several in one day:

  1. 1 hour

    Reminder

The cart link, with the items and an open question.

  2. 24 hours

    Question

Answers shipping, delivery time, size or installments before the customer asks.

  3. Up to 72 hours

    Incentive

A coupon, free shipping or a gift, if your margin allows it.

  4. When they reply
    Sale

    Conversation

The AI agent answers with live store data and sends the payment link.

  5. Pending payment

    Reminder

The payment link again, before it expires.

If the customer buys or replies on any channel, the sequence stops. That is what keeps you from sending a coupon to someone who already paid.

What abandoned cart messages cost on WhatsApp

On the official API, Meta charges per delivered message, and the price depends on the category and on the recipient’s country:

Message Meta category How it is billed
Cart reminder and coupon (you start the conversation) Marketing The highest rate per message
Pending payment reminder for an order already placed Utility A lower rate per message
Replies within 24 hours after the customer writes Service The lowest rate, with 1,000 free per month per number

In Brazil, for example, Meta’s official rate card effective October 1, 2026 lists R$ 0.3217 per marketing message and R$ 0.035 per utility or service message (checked on October 28, 2026). The marketing template opens the conversation, and the replies that follow cost a fraction of it. That is why the reminder should end with an open question. Our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide has the full rate card.

15 abandoned cart message templates

Replace the parts in braces with your store’s data. On WhatsApp, each template that starts a conversation has to be approved by Meta, with variables in place of the data.

Rules to protect your number and your customers

Before turning on cart recovery

  • Send only to customers who opted in to store messages, and keep a record of that consent.
  • Use Meta-approved templates for the first message; free text only within 24 hours after the customer writes.
  • No more than three messages per cart, and stop when the customer replies or buys.
  • Offer a clear way out (“reply STOP”) and honor it immediately.
  • Avoid late-night sends: business hours and early evening usually work better.
  • Use urgency only when it is real: stock and coupon deadlines come from the store, not the copy.
One-off reminder vs. cadence with an AI agent: reply, shipping and stock, payment and when the sequence stops
A reminder only recovers the sale when someone answers right away, with live store data.

From reminder to sale: what happens when the customer replies

An abandoned cart message only recovers the sale if someone answers fast when the customer comes back. With the store connected to Nuvia, the AI agent answers with live store data:

  1. The cart stalls

After 1 hour with no order, the campaign sends the reminder with the items and the link.

  2. The customer replies

The sequence stops and the AI agent takes over, with the cart and history at hand.

  3. The question is answered

The agent checks stock and shipping in the store and explains installments and coupons. Price and delivery time come from the store, never made up.

  4. The order is placed

The agent builds the order and sends the payment link in the conversation.

  5. The payment goes through

The agent confirms the order and shares the delivery estimate.

Exceptions, business orders and complaints go to a person on your team, in the same inbox and with a summary. The cadence can also run on SMS, RCS, email and voice, and stops as soon as the customer replies on any channel. It works with VTEX, Shopify, Nuvemshop and Tray: see WhatsApp for e-commerce.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good abandoned cart message?

One that is short, includes the cart link and ends with an open question such as “any questions?”. The question gets the customer to reply, and the reply opens a cheaper conversation that is easier to convert.

How do I recover an abandoned cart on WhatsApp?

Send a reminder with the cart link about 1 hour later, a message with the most common question within 24 hours and an incentive within 72 hours, only to customers who opted in. When they reply, answer fast and send the payment link in the conversation.

When should I send an abandoned cart message?

The first reminder usually goes out 1 hour after the abandonment, while the purchase is still on the customer’s mind. The next ones go at 24 hours and within 72 hours, and the sequence stops when they reply or buy.

Can I send abandoned cart messages by SMS?

Yes. SMS reaches any phone, even without internet, and works well as a second step after WhatsApp or email. In Nuvia, the same multichannel campaign runs WhatsApp, SMS, RCS, email and voice and stops when the customer replies.

Yes. On WhatsApp, the message that starts the conversation requires opt-in and a Meta-approved template. Without it, your number loses quality and can be blocked.

What is cart abandonment?

It is when a customer adds products to the cart or starts checkout and leaves without paying. Unexpected shipping costs, doubts about the product and a missing payment method are among the most common reasons.
