# WhatsApp: customers can now message you without showing their number

A WhatsApp change that looks like an interface detail, but isn't. WhatsApp has started rolling out usernames in Brazil. In practice: your customer can now message you without giving you their phone number.

Until now, the phone number was the key to everything. It was used to create the contact, deduplicate records, recognize customers who had already talked to you and tie the conversation history together. With usernames, the number may simply not come through.

In its place comes the BSUID, an identifier Meta generates to represent that person within your company's context. It's unique per company and stable: even if the customer changes their username later, the BSUID stays the same. And Meta assigns a BSUID to every WhatsApp user, whether or not they've created a username.

## What Nuvia is doing

BSUID support is in development on the platform. Nuvia handles this identifier, not you — we'll let you know here when it's available. Users are adopting it gradually and optionally, and Meta keeps the link between number and BSUID for 30 days on each conversation, so recognition of your current customers keeps working in the meantime.

What's worth doing now

1. Reserve your company's @username in WhatsApp Manager inside Meta Business Suite. It's first come, first served — secure your brand name before someone else does.
2. If you send Nuvia data to a CRM, ERP or spreadsheet using the phone number as the key, talk to us. That's where the change shows up first, and it's outside the platform.
